Lucas, it is my intention to finish to video. Your explanation of syncing in NLE post seems nicely straightforward and, for all intents and purposes, it seems to be the digital equivalent of the old way of doing business. With regard to TFG, you're right, they do have a lots of good information on thier website. I should have looked there before but I often overlook them as on online resource as I live about a 30 minute drive from TFG. Their section on crystal recorders, however, did not specify any digital models. Do you have any recommendations here? Or, if you use a non-digital crystal recorder, how do you go about digitizing your taped material.
Thanks Roster

Hi Roster,

I would suggest you ignore TFG's crystal tape recorder products. They're not good value for money, by any stretch of the imagination.

The best cheap crystal recorders are minidisc recorders. Small, portable, cheap, reliable. Alas, mostly digital menu controls of record levels etc, minijack in only.

Pro method is a DAT player with XLR ins, but it's not necessary.

I recommend this highly:

I've seen it on a US website for $299 new including US shipping. Very cool and amazing value, especially if you have a laptop to download the data to every 50 minutes.

Lucas, the Fostex MR8, you provided the link on, appears to be an impressive recorder for its price range. I especially liked (and will need) the XLR inputs. Forgive my ignorance here - sound recording was never my forte - but this particular unit is a crystal recorder? Right? Just checking as this was not listed in its specs.

It will maintain its recording speed at a constant rate every time you use it, yes, for sure.

Almost all modern recording devices are crystal regulated nowadays - think about it - it's a 50cent electronics item that is easily incorporated into any electronic device. Even a $2 Chinese watch is crystal regulated! I think that the micro-tape dictation recorders and cheap walkman cassette recorders might not be crystal though.

The Fostex can only record 50 minutes in mono or 25mins in Stereo, before the Compact Flash chip needs to dump its info to the computer, note. This is the only serious reservation I have, but I can live with it - even plugged permenantly into a laptop, it's cheaper than a laptop XLR interface alone. Go for it - I am amazed at the price of this thing - it's perfect for S8 film-making, and writing songs too.
